Madlanga Commission to engage Cabonge over allegations in recording
The Madlanga Commission says it will engage with socialite Serge Cabonge and obtain a statement about the allegations he made in a recording during the bail hearing of former Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya on Tuesday.
The voice recording, which was attributed to Cabonge and played at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court states that Cabonge apparently once helped the family of a man who “sits in front at the Madlanga Commission”.
Cabonge alleges in the voice recording that the man’s daughter faced charges following a collision with a woman carrying a child.
The Madlanga Commission says it will not comment further on this matter at this stage.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels says, “Mr Cabonge has previously been mentioned at hearings before the commission.
The commission will engage with Mr Cabonge and obtain his statement as part of its broad investigation into matters within its terms of reference, including his mention of the commission in the recording.
The commission will not comment further on this matter at this stage.” Meanwhile, the lengthy bail application of Sibiya is expected to continue on Wednesday.
The court earlier heard allegations against the 59-year-old, implicating him in unlawful activities and alleged close ties with the criminal underworld.
Sibiya was arrested last month in Sandton and faces charges, including the alleged sexual grooming of a 16-year-old girl, rape, human trafficking and the contravention of the Firearms Control Act.
