Ramaphosa to inaugurate VZI Gamsberg Phase II concentrator in N Cape
President Cyril Ramaphosa has returned to the Northern Cape to officially inaugurate Vedanta Zinc International’s (VZI) Gamsberg Phase Two concentrator, seven years after opening the mine’s first phase in 2019.
The multi-billion-rand expansion will double the mine’s annual ore-processing capacity from four to eight million tonnes, with zinc-in-concentrate production expected to increase to between 450 000 and 500 000 tonnes a year.
The project is also expected to sustain between 800 and 1,000 jobs during operations.
President @CyrilRamaphosa will officiate the inauguration of the Vedanta Gamsberg Phase II Expansion Project tomorrow, 16 October 2026, in Northern Cape.
The President has highlighted the importance of investment in unlocking the Northern Cape’s economic potential, citing the Gamsberg Mine as an example of how partnerships between government, business, workers and communities can drive growth.
The planned expansion and proposed investment in local smelting and refining capacity could strengthen South Africa’s mineral processing capabilities, create economic opportunities and demonstrate how mining can contribute to inclusive development. #InvestSA — The Presidency (@PresidencyZA) October 15, 2026
