Why do foreign tourists queue up to eat at Tokyo Little House?

Little converted Japanese house has a very big following.

With tourism booming in Japan, so too are some of the country’s cafes and restaurants that have become popular on social media .

For locals who aren’t tapped into the inbound-tourist algorithm, though, the places that are now attracting queues can be a bit of a mystery, and that’s the situation our reporter P.K.

Sanjun found himself in recently, when he spotted a long line of foreign tourists in Akasaka outside what, at first glance, looked to be an ordinary cafe.

Curious to find out what was attracting them, P.K. decided to return at a less busy time after work, and when he did, he found that the line outside had disappeared.

However, as he approached the store, he could see that it was still busy inside, with foreign tourists making up around half the customers.

From the outside, the cafe has a very retro look, and after running a search for it online, P.K. discovered it was actually a 70-year-old traditional Japanese house that has been renovated into a cafe .

Sweetly named “ Tokyo Little House ”, the cafe also serves as a gallery, with several exhibits exploring the “ roots of Tokyo ” inside.

The second floor has been converted into a lodging, where one group can stay at a time, making it a stylish cafe-and-accommodation combo.

For a local like P.K., though, the cafe itself didn’t seem unique enough to explain its popularity, so when he stepped inside and placed an order, he asked staff about the special appeal of the store.

They told him that overseas visitors make up a significant proportion of the cafe’s customers, and queues of foreign tourists outside are a common sight these days.

While the cafe has a very nice ambience to it, one of the really big draws for foreign tourists is said to be the cinnamon toast , which is on the menu at 600 yen (US$4).

P.K. immediately ordered it, with a coffee on the side, and was pleased to find that the toast was crunchy and delicious, with a refined, subtle flavour that made it a good match for the relaxed atmosphere of the cafe.

The coffee and toast were excellent, as were the laid-back vibes and friendly customer service.
