MBA students held for snatching septuagenarian’s chain in Coimbatore

The police have arrested two postgraduate students of a private college at K.G. Chavadi on charge of snatching the gold chain of an elderly woman at Vellalore in Coimbatore on Sunday (August 30, 2026). The police said that a woman student and her male classmate pursuing MBA were arrested for the crime.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the duo committed the crime to fund a lavish lifestyle and clear debts incurred by the male student.

According to the police, they scouted for elderly women in the Vellalore area for the crime on Sunday. The duo approached Saraswathi (73) of Vellalore when she was sitting along with her relatives near Karikkadai bus stop at 5.25 p.m. The male student enquired the septuagenarian about the opening time of a clinic at the place. The woman told him that the clinic was yet to be opened. The student asked her if she knew the residence of the doctor. As the woman pointed toward Maidanam road, the student snatched her chain and escaped in the scooter that his female accomplice rode.

The Podanur police launched an investigation based on the elderly woman’s complaint. Three special teams examined visuals from various surveillance cameras and identified the registration number of the scooter involved in the crime, leading to the arrest of the female student. The police arrested the male student from his college hostel.

The snatched gold chain, two mobile phones and the scooter were recovered from the students. They were produced before the jurisdictional court and were remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday (September 1, 2026).
