Officials of Labour Department on Wednesday (October 14) rescued 13 bonded labourers from an industrial unit at Bharathi Nagar along Kavundanayanakpalayam, and lodged a complaint against the unit with the Tiruppur North police.

Acting on a tip-off, officials of the Labour Department, accompanied by their counterparts from Revenue and Police departments, carried out a surprise inspection and found the 13 workers in bondage conditions.

The workers, who belonged to Krishnagiri, Salem, Theni, Thoothukudi and a few other districts, were sent to their native villages with financial assistance of ₹40,000 each.

Assistant Commissioner of Labour (Enforcement), Tiruppur, T. Usha said the amount was transferred to their bank accounts, as per the directive of the Commissioner of Labour.

Employing labourers in bondage would lead to imprisonment under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, the official warned.
