Person found dead at scene of Tuxedo Park house fire

One person was found dead by firefighters at the scene of a basement fire in Tuxedo Park Thursday afternoon.

Crews were called to the 200 block of 27th Avenue N.E. around 12:20 p.m. for reports of a structure fire.

Firefighters identified a fire in the basement and extinguished it before undertaking a search, said Calgary Fire Department spokesman Alex Kwan.

Fans were needed to clear out heavy smoke before crews could begin looking for possible victims.

“During that search they did locate one victim in the basement,” he said. “When they went to do a rescue, once smoke conditions cleared enough for them to see … it was confirmed as a fatality at this fire.”

The fire was contained to the house where it started, Kwan added, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause.
