Residents furious at illegal dumping in native bushland near school

Albany residents say they are furious after mounds of illegally dumped trash were discovered in the city.

Everything from washing machines to syringes has been found dumped in bushland.

The government authority responsible for some of the land said it was working to have the rubbish removed.

The discovery of piles of rubbish containing dangerous waste illegally dumped in bushland has enraged residents, who say the culprits are "tossers".

The large parcel of native bushland in Albany, 450 kilometres south of Perth, is surrounded by residential housing and backs onto a local primary school.

It is usually a popular area for walking and trail riding, but residents have been left outraged by the discovery, which included syringes and an STD testing kit.

"It's overwhelming to note that it's infecting our environment, and It's going to affect our kids' futures."

Ms Dekker, who volunteers to collect rubbish from beaches and bushland in the region, said the city provided waste removal and urged those responsible to think again.

The state government-owned land has been earmarked for residential development.

Development WA acting CEO Lorissa Kelly said crews were working to have the rubbish removed in the coming days.

She said anyone with information about the illegal dumping should report it to the police.

Ms Dekker said illegal dumping had been reported in other parts of Albany, with everything from small household items to parts of houses found discarded in the bush.

"There are washing machines, dryers and the hole I found on the corner of South Coast Highway and Clydesdale Road had multiple mattresses," she said.

Last year, Main Roads closed a rest stop between Albany and the neighbouring town of Denmark after an excrement-filled toilet and other refuse was dumped at the site.
