Australia safe from Volkswagen's global model cull – for now

Volkswagen Australia has confirmed it will be unaffected by the brand's decision to reduce the size of its global model range, with all its associated lines – across both its passenger and commercial vehicle lineups – to carry on as usual, at least for now.

The German automaker announced in July 2026 that it would begin trimming its model offerings by up to 50 per cent , and reduce variant complexity in trim levels, equipment packages and drivetrain options by up to 75 per cent across the entire Volkswagen Group (referred to as the Group) – including Audi, Skoda, Cupra, and Porsche.

While the Group has yet to announce which models will be cut, Volkswagen Australia senior communications manager Annette Moellhoff maintains the decision to cut models currently has "absolutely no implications" locally.

"We are already quite selective because our main focus is, obviously, delivering and catering to the different customer needs. So our portfolio is already very tailored and targeted," she told CarExpert at the Australian launch of the Amarok W600 .

"We are in conversation with headquarters, but as of right now, it has absolutely no implications for the entirety of the Group in Australia. We are in a really good spot."

Part of the reasoning behind the Group's decision is to reduce overlap between similar models, primarily across passenger car and SUV segments globally.

The Group previously confirmed it would concentrate on "the most attractive market segments" in its cull, and more recent reports suggest models like Audi Q5 Sportback , Skoda Fabia , and Porsche Taycan could be on the chopping block.

A Group division that has had less airtime related to the cull is Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, which is responsible for models like the Caddy van, Multivan people mover, and Amarok ute.

Given the brand's commercial lineups are generally less complicated, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia (VCVA) head of marketing and product, Michelle Rowney, says there are unlikely to be any major changes in the near future.

"There's no immediate impact for us. We are always looking at our model complexity and variants, and that's something that people actually love about us: their ability to add the options that they want, especially in our van product range," she told CarExpert.

"But we always do look to help customers with that complexity. So looking at what the popular options are, what the popular specification is, and then bringing in our variants to meet those customer needs."

VCVA product manager Michael Cenci added that there was little need to strip back the brand's commercial range locally, as the brand is already very particular in which models it chooses to introduce.

"Each one of the Commercial Vehicles products does a very different job. There's very little overlap between them. So we're already quite lean in the way that we offer our product," he told CarExpert.
