Teen gunman dead after fatally shooting three children and an adult at US elementary school

A gunman is among at least five people killed during a school shooting in the US .

Police raced to Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon , after receiving reports of shots being fired about 1pm on Thursday, local time.

Officers arrived within two minutes of the first reports and confirmed the suspect was “down” just seconds later. Police are unsure as to who shot him.

Three children and an adult were killed by the gunman, a 16-year-old boy, a source within law enforcement told CNN.

Official casualty figures are yet to be released, however, with local police only confirming “multiple victims .... The victims include children”.

Bend Police Department Communications Manager Sheila Miller said the shooter was killed, while at least two people have been rushed to hospital.

“There are between 400 and 450 children that go to Silver Rail Elementary and about 40 plus staff.”

Miller said the building is still being evacuated by officials and became emotional while describing the shooting in a town of about 100,000 people.

“I just want to once again reiterate you know this is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend,” she said.

“It’s devastating and our hearts go out to this community and we ask our community to really work together and come together at this time.”

Oregon Governor Tike Kotek said she is “closely monitoring the situation” in a post to X.

“I am grateful to the first responders who are on the scene,” Kotek said.

FBI Director Kash Patel later confirmed agents are on the scene and “assisting our local partners in the investigation”.

Other schools in the Bend-La Pine district were closed by superintendent Steven Cook shortly after news spread of the incident.
