SA to convene SADC regional migration summit: Ntshavheni

South Africa, in its capacity as Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) , will convene a regional migration summit.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni made the announcement while speaking to SABC News ahead of the Bi-National Commission meeting between South Africa and Zimbabwe in Pretoria on Friday.

She says Presidents Cyril Ramaphosa and his Zimbabwean counterpart Emmerson Mnangagwa are also expected to discuss migration during their bilateral talks.

The minister says the matter is not being raised because of the recent protests over illegal immigrants in the country.

She says it’s an issue that regularly features in discussions between the two leaders.

“In SADC we have a protocol on the free movement of people as part of the integration in the region so that is part of the conversation and we agreed to deal with the issue of migration there would be a summit by South Africa as SADC chair on migration.

Also, on safety and security, because the migration issue is not out of its own context it has safety and security implications.

It has communication implications.” South Africa-Zimbabwe Bi-national forum | Closing remarks
