Mbeki set to appear before TRC Cases Inquiry on Monday

Former President Thabo Mbeki is scheduled to appear before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Cases Inquiry on Monday and Tuesday.

He is expected to address the issue of whether there was ever an informal agreement reached between the African National Congress (ANC) and apartheid era generals to avoid prosecutions on both sides.

Such claims have been made by a number of witnesses including former TRC Commissioner Ndumisa Ntsebeza and former National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Director Anton Ackerman.

Businessman Jurgen Kogl, who facilitated the series of meetings between 1998 and 2003 with Mbeki at the helm of the ANC delegation, has rejected the claim.

“I could never find nor have I ever seen or formulated any so-called informal document which had discussed anything including providing general amnesty recorded in such a note that would take forward in any negotiation of this kind an idea.

It was never there and so what mainly what I discovered from the streams of the commission, the notion that there was an informal agreement for non-prosecution and it was all lawyers that talked that drivel, I can say there was never any of that” VIDEO | Mbeki set to testify before Khampepe inquiry
