Carrim to spend weekend behind bars as case postponed to Monday
The matter involving North West businessman Suliman Carrim has been postponed to Monday and he will remain behind bars at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility in Pretoria.
Carrim appeared at the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court charged with contravening a section of the Commissions Act by failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission despite being directed to do so.
The state had earlier requested a postponement, saying bail investigations had not been completed.
His legal counsel, Advocate Hendrik Potgieter, also questioned his client about his medical condition.
Carrim told the court that he had been getting better before his arrest.
Suliman Carrim | Canny Maphanga gives an update on the bail hearing: “I was getting better; I must be honest with you.
I was getting better.
There’s a few setbacks, except what has happened or transpired from yesterday has taken me back.
And in the past, my wife had become my deponent because of my medical condition.
She had become my deponent and she had been doing most of the affidavits on my behalf to the commission because of my condition.” Earlier, Carrim ‘s legal counsel argued that his client suffered from a heart condition that previously resulted in hospitalisation and postponements before the Madlanga Commission.
Advocate Potgieter submitted that the stress and anxiety arising from the proceedings were taking a significant toll on Carrim’s health and could trigger a panic attack.
