PRASA fixes 35 out of 40 priority passenger rail corridors

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) says 35 out of its 40 priority passenger rail corridors have been successfully restored.

The agency says this forms part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate rail infrastructure and upgrade signalling systems following widespread vandalism during the suspension of commuter rail services during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.

PRASA’s Group CEO Hishaam Emeran says the newly improved rail corridors will ensure that trains run frequently.

“We will be showcasing some of the progress that PRASA has made over the years in terms of bringing back a number of corridors and services across the country.

The corridor we will be showcasing today is the Mabopane corridor, where a lot of work has gone into restoring the infrastructure, electrical systems and stations, and where we are now running modern trains,” says Emeran.

Minister of @Dotransport Barbara Creecy will oversee progress in rebuilding and improving PRASA’s passenger rail services along the Mabopane Corridor, including infrastructure and signalling upgrades aimed at improving safety, reliability and train frequency.

The visit will also mark the launch of the new @Citytocitybus fleet, strengthening PRASA’s long-distance passenger services.

“This is one of the few corridors in Gauteng that is signalled, as we still need to recover signalling in most other corridors.

Signalling is important because it allows us to run trains at a higher frequency.

You can see trains running every 20 minutes during peak on this corridor.

We will get to 10, and eventually 5 minutes, as we improve our services, but that is what is critical to showcase today,” says Emeran.
