SABC, Chinese broadcaster JSBC enter into MOU

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a Chinese media house, Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation (JSBC) to strengthen broadcasting cooperation and promote cultural exchange between South Africa and China.

As part of this cooperation, the public broadcaster is televising China Hour, which provides South African audiences with greater insight into Chinese culture, society and developments, while fostering mutual understanding and people-to-people relations between the two countries.

Group Chief Executive Officer of the SABC Nomsa Chabeli says, “The SABC has a responsibility to provide content that informs, educates, and reflects the country’s diverse audiences and its international relationships. Cooperation with international broadcasters can contribute to this mandate when undertaken within the SABC’s editorial and public-service framework. China Hour therefore represents an element of broader media and cultural engagement between the two countries, with the objective of fostering mutual understanding and strengthening communication between South African and Chinese audiences”.

China Hour will broadcast Monday to Thursday from 23h00 to 00:00 on SABC2, giving South African viewers access to a selection of Chinese television content designed to showcase the country’s stories, culture, people and contemporary life.

In addition to the scheduled China Hour broadcast on SABC2, audiences will be able to discover more Chinese content on SABC+ through Video on Demand (VOD).
