Gauteng Transport reignites Atteridgeville bridge project

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is undertaking a bridge rehabilitation project in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, to improve road safety.

The project, which costs more than R74 million, is expected to be completed in August next year.

Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela says a new contractor has been appointed after the department terminated the previous contractor’s contract for failing to meet the required standards.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, accompanied by MMC Hlangi Mogale, MMC Frans Boshielo and MMC Palesa Modise, attended a Service Delivery Imbizo at the Atteridgeville Brazzaville Sportsground in Ward 107.

The engagement provided an opportunity for community members to raise concerns and share their experiences regarding service delivery in the area.

Residents engaged with the MEC and government officials on challenges affecting their daily lives, including roads, transport, infrastructure and other community needs.

The Imbizo also sought to strengthen communication between government and residents, while identifying issues requiring urgent attention and ensuring that community concerns are brought to the relevant authorities for intervention. #RoadSafety #AgaLeRona #GrowingGautengTogether — GP Roads and Transport (@GPDRT_) August 14, 2026 She has also warned that disruptions could delay construction and increase costs.

Diale-Tlabela says machinery and equipment on site incur significant costs, urging communities to engage with the department to resolve concerns without disrupting the project.

“We’re doing our best and that’s why we’re saying to them, do not disrupt.

Once a project like this is under way and a contractor is on site, it costs us millions.

When you disrupt a project like this, you must know that the machines on site cost us money, and they don’t come cheap.

It runs into millions.

Those are the millions we could save if there were no disruptions, but instead, we engaged with each other and found ways to resolve the issues,” she says.
