Courtesy of Riana Ang-Canning We went on a multigenerational trip to Spain to celebrate my daughter's first birthday.

We had already been traveling with her for four months and had learned to adjust our expectations.

While some things didn't go as planned, it was still a fantastic family trip.

For our daughter's first birthday, my husband and I flew to Malaga, Spain, with our almost-1-year-old, my mom, my dad, my mother-in-law, and two family friends.

But we quickly realized we would need to pivot.

By that point, my husband, daughter, and I were already four months into a six-month trip traveling through Europe .

We learned that a slower pace of travel — where we could spend time back at the Airbnb playing and napping — suited our family best.

The author and her family spent plenty of time resting and playing at the Airbnb.
