Google Messages finally has custom backgrounds and themes — here’s how to personalize your chats

Google Messages now lets you customize your chats You can change bubble colors and wallpapers for each chat individually RCS must be enabled to do this Despite having been around for a long time, Google Messages hasn’t let you properly customize chats in the past.

But now this feature has finally rolled out.

As announced in a Google blog post , you can now change both bubble accent colors and the wallpaper.

For the latter, you’ll be able to choose from curated options in categories like ‘animals’ and ‘space’, or you can choose an image from your gallery.

And while you can manually change the message bubble colors, you can also have them automatically adjust to match your wallpaper changes. (Image credit: Google) How to customize your chats Making these changes is simple.

Just open Google Messages, and then select the chat you want to customize.

Then either tap the name of the person or group in the top bar, or tap the three dots in the top right corner.

From that screen, tap ‘Chat theme’, where you’ll find a color palette to select a shade for the chat, and a wallpaper option, where you can either browse through Google’s selection or tap ‘Choose a photo’ to upload one from your gallery.

Once you’ve chosen a wallpaper, tap ‘Next’ to preview it and then tap ‘Apply’.

Then just do the same for any other chats you want to customize.

Note, though, that RCS must be enabled to access these customization options, and that the changes you make will only be visible to you — not the people you’re chatting with.
