Stokes signs for Adelaide Strikers in Big Bash League

Former England cricketer Ben Stokes will return to the Big Bash League this winter, joining the Adelaide Strikers for his first appearance in the franchise tournament since the 2014-15 season; Stokes retired from international cricket in June

Former England Test captain Ben Stokes has signed for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League (BBL).

Stokes will play in the franchise competition this winter after penning a one-year deal with the side following his retirement from international cricket.

It marks his return to the BBL for the first time in 12 years. He last played during the 2014-15 season for the Melbourne Renegades.

Stokes stunned the cricketing world when he announced his decision to step down as England's Test captain and retire from international cricket midway through his side's third Test against New Zealand in June.

The shock announcement came during the afternoon session on the fourth day of the series decider at Trent Bridge, with Stokes bowling when the news broke. He responded by taking a wicket with the very next ball.

His decision came after he was left out of the second Test against New Zealand following an investigation into an incident at a London nightclub.

He returned for the third Test, during which he made the decision to step down.

On making the decision to play in the BBL, Stokes said: "I'm really excited to be joining the Adelaide Strikers for BBL|16.

"I've always enjoyed playing in Australia, and when the opportunity came up to join the Strikers it was one I couldn't pass up.

"Adelaide Oval is an incredible place to play cricket, the Big Bash is a fantastic competition and the Strikers have an exciting group, so I'm looking forward to meeting the players, getting stuck in and contributing to a successful season.

"I can't wait to get started, create some special memories with the group and give Strikers fans plenty to cheer about."

Adelaide Strikers head coach Tim Paine said: "Ben is one of the greatest all-rounders the game has seen, a proven match-winner and a competitor who thrives under pressure.
