Indian sailor killed in ‘torpedo attack’

The rest of the 28-member crew of the bulk carrier MV Cape Dao, including 19 Indian nationals, were rescued after the incident off the coast of Oman An Indian seafarer was killed when a commercial ship was attacked off the coast of Oman on Wednesday.

The Antigua and Barbuda-flagged bulk carrier MV Cape Dao was reportedly hit by two torpedoes, killing crew member Suraj Yadav from Deoria in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

All the other crew members, including 19 other Indian nationals, have been rescued.

An Omani warship helped with the rescue operations, reports said.

The attack caused damage near the engine room and accommodation area, the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) posted on X.

Some reports said the ship, which was sailing from the port of Mina Saqr in the United Arab Emirates to India, was struck by projectiles.

No group or country has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Another Indian seafarer killed.

Wiper Suraj Yadav of Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, is dead after MV Cape Dao was attacked today while sailing toward India.

Two torpedoes: • Port side C-deck (accommodation) • Port side hull (engine room) Assurances… pic.twitter.com/AvrD2p1Cwd — FSUI (@FSUIINDIA) September 23, 2026 The Indian Foreign Ministry condemned the attack and said “the targeting of commercial shipping, seafarers and civilian infrastructure in the region must end.” The Indian Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Omani authorities to facilitate the early repatriation of the rescued seafarers.

At least ten Indian nationals have died so far in attacks on commercial shipping in the Middle East since the start of hostilities there.

India is the second largest supplier of seafarers, with more than 300,000 Indians working in the shipping industry globally.

New Delhi has repeatedly condemned such attacks and issued advisories for its nationals on ships transiting the Gulf and Black Sea conflict zones amid the rising attacks on commercial shipping.
