Gold and silver prices: The price of the yellow metal in India's retail market rose on Tuesday, 25 August, amid ongoing uncertainty over the US-Iran conflict in the Middle East.
The Trump administration on Monday announced a plan to isolate Iran’s economy by threatening to impose secondary sanctions on the ‘enablers’ keeping the Islamic Republic afloat.
“We are launching an economic onslaught against Iran’s financial connections around the globe,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said as he unveiled the new sanctions scheme, dubbed 'Operation Economic Outcast', as per a report by CNBC US.
Consequently, in international markets, gold prices rose on Tuesday to their highest in more than three months, supported by a weaker US dollar and by the US Treasury’s bond buyback plans, which keep the lid on yields.
Spot gold gained 0.6% to $4,677.19 per ounce, its highest since mid-May, with United Overseas Bank (UOB) forecasting that gold was on track ‘for its strongest monthly gain since September 1999.’ The yellow metal has gained over 15% so far this month, according to another CNBC US report.
Due to these developments, both 24-karat and 22-karat gold rates are showing a marginal increase across major cities in India. Silver prices, on the other hand, declined in the domestic bullion market.
MCX gold rate on 25 August was trading 0.09% higher at ₹ 163,640 per 10 grams. MCX silver futures, on the other hand, were trading about 0.62% lower at ₹ 243,730 per kg at around 9:13 am.
In the retail market, gold is sold in 24-karat and 22-karat purity. While 24-karat gold is considered the purest form, 22-karat gold is commonly used for jewellery because it's more durable.
