The Kozhikode Beach Fire and Rescue Station, which was shifted to Meenchanda last month, has returned to its original location at the beach after the Kozhikode Corporation provided a building near the old station to house the facility.

It was inaugurated by Kozhikode Corporation Mayor O. Sadasivan on Saturday (August 22, 2026). The return of the fire station to the beach is expected to ensure a quicker emergency response in the city.

The civic body has allotted space for the station in a newly constructed building near the old Corporation office, which housed the Azhaku office and the transport wing. Files and other materials belonging to the two departments were shifted to make way for the fire station. The building has been equipped with facilities to store firefighting equipment and accommodate personnel.

The wall separating the premises of the fire station from the Corporation building was demolished. In addition to the existing temporary shed on the fire station premises, another shed was erected to park vehicles.

The civic body handed over the building to the Fire and Rescue Services department as a temporary arrangement.

The Corporation’s intervention came amid concerns that relocating the beach fire station to Meenchanda would delay responses to fire emergencies in key commercial areas such as S.M. Street, Valiyangadi, and Palayam, where the risk of fire accidents is relatively high. Following the closure of the beach fire station, fire tenders had to be dispatched from Meenchanda or Vellimadukunnu.
