In many Maths classrooms, a student encounters a challenging question, pauses for a moment, and almost immediately looks towards the teacher for assistance. Within seconds, a method is demonstrated, the solution is revealed, and the class moves on. The problem is solved, but has learning truly occurred? In our eagerness to help students succeed, we may sometimes deny them one of the most powerful ingredients of learning: the opportunity to struggle, think critically, and make sense of ideas and resolutions for themselves. Far from being an obstacle, productive struggle can be the pathway through which deep and lasting understanding is built.
Learning Maths is not about avoiding difficulty but about learning to navigate it. Here is where the idea of productive struggle becomes significant. Productive struggle refers to the intellectual effort students invest in solving challenging mathematical questions before receiving explicit instruction or complete solutions. It is not about leaving learners confused or frustrated. Rather, it involves engaging them in tasks that are demanding, yet achievable with thoughtful reasoning, persistence, and appropriate teacher support. Quite often, educators immediately demonstrate solutions due to several impediments, such as time constraints, difficulty completing the lesson plan, intelligent students who want more problems, and to avoid stress. Unfortunately, many classrooms unintentionally deprive students of this opportunity. It also sends an unintended message that Maths is about receiving answers rather than constructing understanding.
Students begin to believe that struggling is a sign of inability. Consequently, they become reluctant to attempt unfamiliar questions independently and lose confidence when confronted with tricky questions. However, educational research consistently shows that meaningful and impactful learning occurs when students wrestle with ideas, use different modalities, commit mistakes, and refine their critical thinking. The temporary discomfort of grappling with a difficult question often leads to much deeper conceptual understanding and longer-lasting learning. If learners use their reasoning skills to find solutions independently, learning becomes more effective.
Consider a classroom where students are encouraged to explore the relationship between the angles of a triangle rather than being directly told that the sum of the angles of a triangle is 180°. Some might draw diagrams, while others may fold paper triangles or engage in logical reasoning. Throughout this exploration, misconceptions may arise, creating valuable opportunities for insightful discussions.
