Three college students killed, four injured as car overturns near Madurantakam

Three college students were killed and four others seriously injured after the car they were travelling in overturned after one of its tyres burst near Madurantakam in Chengalpattu district on Friday (August 28, 2026) night.

The victims, students of Vels College in Chennai, had travelled to Puducherry with their friends and were returning to Chennai when the accident occurred.

According to the police, the car was proceeding on the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway near Madurantakam when one of its rear tyres suddenly burst. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which reportedly veered across the road before overturning.

All seven students travelling in the car sustained serious injuries. On receiving information, police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the injured students to the government hospitals in Chengalpattu and Madurantakam, where they were undergoing treatment.

The deceased have been identified as Deepak Raj, 19, of Vadalur, Cuddalore district, Puyuterin Staniko, 22, of Vilavancode, Kanyakumari district, and Raj Prasad, 19, of Pasupathipalayam, Karur district.

The accident caused heavy traffic congestion on the highway. Police personnel were deployed to regulate traffic and clear the affected stretch.

The Madurantakam police have registered a case and are conducting an investigation into the accident.
