Traffic police in Hyderabad and the neighbouring commissionerates booked 982 cases of drunk driving during special enforcement drives conducted over the weekend, with two-wheeler riders accounting for the majority of offenders.

Hyderabad Traffic Police booked 404 motorists during a two-day special drive on August 21 and 22. In Cyberabad, 261 motorists were apprehended during a weekend special drive. Two-wheelers accounted for 215 cases, followed by four-wheelers with 38, three-wheelers with five and heavy vehicles with three. Cyberabad, Future City and Malkajgiri police also pointed out that motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol and cause a fatal accident can be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The provision carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.

Court action was also reported in earlier drunk driving cases. In Cyberabad, 232 cases were disposed of by courts between August 17 and 22, with six offenders being directed to pay a fine along with social service and 226 being fined. In Future City, 61 cases were disposed of between August 15 and 21, with seven offenders being told to pay a fine along with social service and 44 being fined. In Malkajgiri, 168 cases were disposed of between August 16 and 22, with one offender receiving fine and jail, 20 being given fine and social service and 147 being fined.

Police said the special drives would continue and appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic enforcement personnel.
