Five persons were killed and 30 others injured after a bus collided with a truck on a national highway in the Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday (September 2, 2026), police said.
The accident took place around 4:30 p.m. on National Highway 39 near Badwar, located under the Gudh police station area, about 30 kilometres from the district headquarters, a senior official said.
The accident scene dissolved into chaos as the victims’ screams filled the air. Locals immediately began relief work and informed the police.
Soon after being informed, police and administration teams arrived at the scene and launched relief and rescue operations. Several ambulances were dispatched to transport the injured to the hospital.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bhavana Maravi told PTI Videos, “Five people died in the accident, while 30 others were injured.” She said all the injured were shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Rewa, where they are undergoing treatment.
Rescue operations are still underway at the scene, and efforts are on to ensure that nobody is trapped in the bus, she said.
Maravi said the impact was so severe that the truck overturned and the bus fell into a water-filled drain.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the accident and said the state government has issued instructions to provide financial assistance of ₹2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh each to the seriously injured.
In a post on X, he said, “The news of the deaths of passengers in the collision between a bus and a dumper on the Rewa-Sidhi highway today is extremely heartbreaking. I pray for the peace of the departed souls and a speedy recovery for the injured.” Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Anurag Tiwari said additional beds have been reserved in the hospital so that other injured people can also be treated immediately if required.
National Highway 39 connects Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh to Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, and passes through Madhya Pradesh.
