A 23-year-old youth, who was undergoing treatment at a private de-addiction centre in Mangadu, was stabbed to death by two employees on Thursday, after he allegedly made derogatory remarks about them and their families.
More than 100 people are undergoing treatment for drug addiction at the Chakkara Nagar centre. The victim, Nishanth, a native of Tiruvottiyur, had been staying there for six months.
According to the police, Babu, 55, and Sivakumar, 57, had undergone treatment at the centre and began working there after recovering from addiction.
Nishanth allegedly frequently made derogatory remarks about the two men and their families.
Angered by Nishanth’s comments on Thursday, the duo took a knife from the kitchen and repeatedly stabbed him in the neck, killing him on the spot.
On receiving information about the incident, the Mangadu police recovered the body and arrested Babu and Sivakumar. Further investigation is under way.
The incident has also raised concerns about the functioning of the centre. A few years ago, over 30 people undergoing treatment at the same facility, assaulted a security guard and escaped.
