O il prices jumped more than $1 a barrel on Monday (August 31, 2026) after ⁠the U.S. attacked an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz and drew retaliation from Tehran, as conflict in West Asia extended into its sixth month.

The United States said on Sunday (August 30, 2026) it had attacked Iranian rocket launchers on a small island in the Strait of Hormuz, its first strikes on Iran in a month, prompting Tehran to retaliate.

The U.S. strikes resulted in “casualties,” said Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, which in turn attacked U.S. military targets in Jordan, state media reported.

Oil prices jumped more than two per cent on Monday, with the Brent international benchmark rising above $90 a barrel after a fresh flare-up in the US-Iran war.

In equity trading, Wall Street and Europe’s main markets dipped as investors continued to react to hawkish comments from Federal Reserve chief Kevin Warsh.

After a run lower for most of last week, oil prices spiked again Monday, a day after the United States said it had attacked Iranian rocket launchers on a small island in the Strait of Hormuz, its first strikes on the country in a month.

Tehran retaliated by launching missiles at US military targets in Jordan.

⁠U.S. President Donald Trump said he was reviewing the United ‌States’ position on the Falkland Islands, the ‌remote British-ruled archipelago ‌in ⁠the South Atlantic.

“I always ⁠review every position. That’s just one of many,” Mr. Trump told reporters in ‌the Oval Office when asked about the islands’ sovereignty.

Mr. Trump did not signal ‌whether the review would change the United States’ position on sovereignty, ⁠which has generally avoided taking sides since 1982.

Argentina, ‌led by Trump ally Javier Milei, has also claimed sovereignty over the islands.
