Villagers of Kodiyankulam in Ottapidaram taluk submitted a petition at the Thoothukudi District Collectorate on Monday, opposing the proposed establishment of a gravel quarry and drinking water production unit in their village.

The villagers submitted the petition at the weekly grievance redress meeting chaired by Thoothuludi District Collector Vishu Mahajan.

In a petition submitted by the villagers, residents of Kodiyankulam said arrangements are being made to establish a gravel quarry and drinking water production unit within the village limits. However, a resolution opposing the proposals was passed at the gram sabha meeting held on August 15, 2025.

They added that if these units were established, the public would be severely affected and may be forced to leave the village. Around 10 villages in the area were also likely to be affected. They urged the Collector not to permit the establishment of a stone quarry or drinking water production unit either within the Kodiyankulam village limits and Maniyachi firka limits.

A separate petition submitted by the residents of Kamaraj Nagar in Meelavittan opposed the proposed establishment of a new Tasmac liquor outlet in the area.

The petitioners stated that a church, temple, schools and government offices were located within 500 metres of the proposed site and that establishing a Tasmac outlet would violate legal norms. They also expressed concern over possible law and order issues and the safety of women and children. They urged the authorities to drop the proposal.
