LRG Govt. Arts College for Women in Tiruppur to create green lung space on campus

LRG Government Arts College for Women in the heart of highly-urbanised Tiruppur City has joined hands with an environmental organisation to create a green lung space for the city on a 10-acre expanse on its campus.

A memorandum of understanding signed between the college and VETRY NGO envisages transforming the campus into a model green college over the next three years.

According to Natraj Muthusamy, chief executive officer, VETRY NGO, and college principal U. Sumathy, the departments of botany and zoology will be actively involved in the initiative.

A decade ago, VETRY NGO had, under its ‘Vanathukkul Tiruppur’ project, planted 270 saplings on the campus, most of which are now fully grown and maintained well.

The involvement of 3,600 students would accord a significant thrust to the ecological initiative, Mr. Muthusamy said.

The project, to be executed in phases, would encompass installing rainwater harvesting systems and establishing comprehensive campus waste management facilities.

The plan also included establishment of specialised herbal and kitchen gardens, alongside a dedicated butterfly garden for overall campus beautification.

To promote environmental data literacy and public awareness, a large digital LED board would be installed near the campus main gate facing the main road and the Collectorate to display real-time ecological data, including temperature, Air Quality Index (AQI), wind speed, wind direction, date, and time, he said.

The MoU also envisaged establishing a nursery on the campus. This will be maintained by students from the department of botany. The saplings raised in the campus will be transplanted in plantation sites under the Vanathukkul Tiruppur project.
