The State Election Commission has announced the decision to hold long-pending elections to village committees in the areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). The election body said it would announce the poll schedule on August 31, 2026.

The election schedule and other details will be announced at a press conference addressed by State Election Commissioner Pradip Kumar Chakraborty on the afternoon of August 31, a senior election official said on Saturday (August 29, 2026).

Elections to the village committees have been long overdue, with tribal parties and forums demanding polls be held, and the High Court petitioned by one of them.

Tipra Motha, which currently leads the TTAADC, and Opposition parties, have been blaming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for deliberately lingering over the election process due to political considerations. The Tipra Motha also flagged the delay with the Central government.

Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya had earlier said the party would contest the village committee elections on its own, and not in an alliance. A very senior BJP leader recently approached the regional party for a tie-up, sources claimed.

Elections will be held for 587 village committees. Draft electoral rolls for the village committees were recently published by the State Election Commission.
