Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker expunges remarks against Karunanidhi by Law Minister Nirmalkumar

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar, on Tuesday (August 18, 2026), expunged the remarks made by Law Minister R. Nirmalkumar against late Chief Minister and DMK leader K. Karunanidhi, saying he would not allow any speech or reference that had no connection with the issue being discussed in the special calling-attention motion.

“I do not know whose attention you seek to draw through your remarks. I cannot allow anything that is not directly related to the issue. You can certainly refer to similar incidents associated with the subject being discussed,” he said after Mr. Nirmalkumar, who was replying to a special calling-attention motion on the killing of three Tamils in Karnataka, made the remarks.

He also made it clear that he would not allow anyone other than the member who had given notice to speak when a special calling-attention motion had been moved under Rule 55 of the Assembly Rules.

He advised members to remain seated when the whip of their party stood to address the House or the Speaker. “The post of whip has been created to ensure cordiality between the Speaker and members of the House,” he said.
