A school auditorium at Odakkali near Kothamangalam collapsed amid heavy rain and strong wind in the area on Tuesday.

The auditorium of Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Odakkali, crashed down around 4.30 p.m. A tragedy was averted as students and teachers had left the school premises after school hours.

Asamannoor grama panchayat president Salim N.M. said the structure — a steel-framed open canopy — was constructed four years ago. He added that it needed to be probed if there were any lapses in the construction.

The Kuruppampady police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel visited the accident site. “The remains of the structure will have to be removed from the school compound immediately to ensure the safety of students,” Mr. Salim said.
