Zambia's Hichilema wins second term

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has won a second five-year term, securing a decisive victory in an election.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia announced the result in the early hours of Tuesday, declaring Hichilema the winner after he secured about 61.4% of the valid vote.

His main challenger, Brian Mundubile, received about 38%.

"I therefore declare Hichilema Hakainde to be president-elect of the Republic of Zambia this 18th day of August, 2026," commission chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis said.

The result gives Hichilema another five-year mandate after his victory in 2021.

Following the announcement, hundreds of Hichilema supporters gathered in Lusaka, wearing the red colours of his United Party for National Development (UPND), singing, dancing and setting off firecrackers.

In a statement after his victory, Hichilema said he was "truly humbled by the trust you have placed in our hands" and reached out to supporters of his opponents.

"We hear you, and we will continue to work for you," he said.

Hichilema's re-election extends his mandate at a time when Zambia has made progress in strengthening its public finances and stabilizing its economy, although high living costs, unemployment and concerns over household incomes remain major challenges.

The president will now be expected to build on the country's macroeconomic improvements while addressing challenges facing ordinary Zambians. (With input from the wires)
