Hot US inflation, rising AI costs spark global chip stock rout

Fears over looming US Federal Reserve rate hikes and the staggering cost of artificial intelligence infrastructure sent global technology stocks into a tailspin on Wednesday, hitting chipmakers especially hard.

US consumer prices rose 3.7% year over year in September, and the hotter-than-expected inflation print pushed market bets on an October Fed rate increase to 50%.

The S&P 500 fell 1.1%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 dropped 2% in its largest single-day decline in three months.

Semiconductor stocks bore the brunt of the selloff, dragging the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down 4.3%.

The losses rippled across global markets: South Korea's KOSPI plunged more than 7% to its lowest level since April, while Japan's Nikkei 225 fell nearly 4%.

Driving the rout is mounting anxiety over the skyrocketing capital expenditures needed to sustain the AI boom, as elevated borrowing costs threaten to squeeze tech giants' budgets and sap demand throughout the semiconductor supply chain.

Chinese semiconductor manufacturer CXMT also reported technical progress on a new DRAM cell structure, signaling intensifying global market competition.

DRAM memory chips hold the vital data processed by primary AI processors during complex computations.

"The rout in chip stocks seems set to continue thanks once again to news from China," Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at trading platform IG, told The Guardian.

Industry executives and research analysts have also raised alarm about market froth and unachievable return expectations.

Broadcom Chief Executive Officer Hock Tan cautioned earlier this week that market speculation has outstripped fundamentals.

"A lot of investors have no clue what they are investing in," Tan told Bloomberg, adding that traders "set very extreme expectations only to find out that it’s almost like they are in a casino." The stress is also spreading to the debt market as analysts warn that massive AI infrastructure spending is fundamentally unsustainable.

Gartner estimates AI providers will invest nearly $7 trillion through 2030, but total AI revenue will reach no more than $3.6 trillion — far short of the $8.5 trillion needed to cover capital costs and required returns.

Without a surge in end-user monetization, Gartner senior director analyst Will Sommer predicts that up to 80% of independent cloud service providers could cease standalone operations by 2030.
