US county sues to block Trump's Triumphal Arch project

Local authorities in Arlington County, Virginia, on Thursday sued to block construction of US President Donald Trump's planned Triumphal Arch project.

Arlington County is located in Northern Virginia just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC.

The county government filed the lawsuit in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, arguing that the Trump administration's planned 250-foot-tall arch violates environmental laws and requires further review.

"As contemplated, the Arch will dwarf Paris's Arc de Triomphe and directly obstruct the line of sight between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery that was deliberately created to symbolize the nation's post-Civil War reunification," the complaint said.

Construction of the arch on Memorial Circle will "cause significant harm" to Arlington County and its residents, as the site lies within a busy traffic corridor, according to the five-person Arlington County Board.

The complaint also noted that construction of the arch will "harm public safety" in Arlington by clogging thoroughfares needed for emergency transport services.

"It threatens to increase noise and air pollution in Arlington by necessitating the diversion of certain flights into and out of Reagan National Airport," it continued.

According to the complaint, the National Park Service failed to take a "hard look" at the environmental impacts of the arch project, as required by law.

The county filed the lawsuit to halt the agency's "feverish pace" toward construction of the arch and to ensure that the "hard look" mandated by the National Environmental Policy Act is completed before the agency commences "disruptive and harmful ground-disturbing activities." Trump first unveiled the administration's plan to construct the arch in October 2025, at the time hailing it as a monument to the 250th anniversary of American independence.

More recently, Trump announced the arch would serve as a "top-grade Military Complex/Triumphal Arch," which will store large quantities of ammunition and "house, store, and have the rapid ability to use large numbers of drones, plus Snipers." In early September, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced on social media that excavation work could begin over the next two weeks.
