Meta settles social media addiction suit, will pay $18B

Meta Platforms agreed to settle a major social media addiction lawsuit on Wednesday, Aug.

26, with the state of California.

The tech giant, owner of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, agreed to pay $18 billion and add stronger child-safety measures on its platforms.

A 29-state lawsuit was brought against the company, accusing it of contributing to the youth mental health crisis, designing features to addict children and hiding the features from the public.

The decision will require a judge's approval before it's implemented, who said they were inclined to approve the settlement, but will still need time to fully review it.
