Tesla's rocket-powered Roadster sparks debate over real-world use

The next-generation Roadster has drawn praise and skepticism from the automotive and technology industries after a demonstration featuring brief airborne maneuvers.

Combining electric-car engineering with aerospace technology, the vehicle has reignited debate over how far such innovations can go beyond a spectacular showcase.

The demonstration featured cold-gas thrusters developed with SpaceX and a suction system that generates downforce, allowing the car to drive upside down on a specially designed ramp.

Tesla claims the vehicle can accelerate from zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than one second.

However, its airborne stunts do not amount to sustained flight.

The display impressed Chinese automakers.

Nio founder and CEO William Li praised the demonstration, writing on social media, "Amazing! This we really don't have." He Xiaopeng, chairman and CEO of XPENG, called it "a very cool alternative form of flying car," while raising questions about flight safety, range and certification.

Others were less convinced about its commercial significance.

Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management and a technology analyst, described the launch as an "engineering flex" with little commercial value.

Technology commentator Marques Brownlee also questioned the performance claims and the proposed production timeline.

Chinese analysts offered a more measured assessment.

Automotive analyst Mei Songlin said the vehicle could help bring aerospace innovations into the automotive sector.

Technology analyst Zhang Junyi noted that successfully putting such an innovative vehicle into mass production would itself be a considerable achievement.

Engineering constraints remain.
