Changchun welcomes flame as 2027 Winter Universiade countdown begins
With less than 100 days remaining until the start of the 2027 Winter Universiade, Changchun served as the backdrop for a vibrant flame welcome ceremony.
Originating from Turin, the flame made its way to northeast China's Jilin province, much to the excitement of athletes and fans alike.
The ceremony was held at the Changchun Museum of History and Culture, where the Games Executive Chairman Hu Yuting had the honor of lighting the cauldron.
Scheduled to take place from January 15 to 25, the event, whose competitors are youth and student athletes, will feature 97 medal events spanning 12 disciplines, with organizers noting that registrations have reached an all-time high in Winter Universiade history.
The event returns to China for the first time in nearly two decades following the 2009 Harbin Games.
The host nation is assembling a delegation of about 400 members, including roughly 240 athletes ready to compete in 11 of the 12 disciplines, with ice hockey being the only exception.
"This Winter Universiade brings young athletes from different countries and regions together in Changchun.
More than a competitive platform for youth winter sports, the event also serves as a window to showcase China's achievements in education and youth development.
It offers a great opportunity to tell the stories of Chinese youth, and deepen friendships among young people around the world," said Wang Jiayi, Vice President of the upcoming Winter Universiade.
Organizers have prioritized cost efficiency and sustainability in their preparations, opting to upgrade existing facilities for the 13 competition venues rather than constructing new infrastructure.
Post-Games, these venues will remain accessible to the public, serving as hubs for professional training, competitive events, and recreational winter sports.
