Canada removes U.S. seafood from counter-tariffs, citing feedback

Canada removed fish and seafood from a list of counter-tariffs one day after announcing import duties against United States goods.

Officials made the change “based on feedback” in order “to protect against broader economic harms ,” Canada’s Department of Finance said on X, without elaborating further.

“We are continually working with Canadian industries to assess the effectiveness of these measures, with a primary focus on industries that have been targeted by U.S. tariffs ,” the statement said.

Canada will make adjustments to maintain a dollar-for-dollar and rate-for-rate response to U.S. products, it added. The Canadian tariffs are set to take effect Sept. 8 .

Maine and Alaska were exposed to the seafood duties ahead of hotly-contested midterm elections in those states.

Some Canadian processors that import U.S. lobster expressed worries about the levies, while producers were concerned about potential U.S. retaliation, Canada’s Global News reported.

Canada’s counter-tariff package announced on Tuesday broadly mirrored the products hit by approximately US$20 billion in U.S. tariffs that kicked in Saturday, targeting products like pulp and paper. However, fish and seafood have not been a particular target of the Trump administration’s duties.
