Ottawa Citizen ·

The pedestrian hit by a vehicle in Sandy Hill on Oct. 14 succumbed to her injuries in hospital, police said, a death that marks the 30th traffic fatality on Ottawa streets in 2026.

The collision occurred just before 8:30 a.m. Oct. 14 near the intersection of Friel and Besserer streets. Paramedics transported the victim, a 78-year-old woman, to hospital in critical condition. She died overnight.

Ottawa police are continuing their investigation. A nyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have dashcam or video footage of it, is asked to come forward. They may contact the OPS Fatal Collision Investigation Unit at 613-236-1222, extension 2345.

The death is the second traffic fatality in Ottawa this week, following a pre-dawn incident in Barrhaven on Oct. 14 that killed a 60-year-old male pedestrian .

That death prompted police to issue an urgent plea for all road users to prioritize safety.

They said the number of traffic fatalities in the city this year — 30 — has already surpassed the 26 who lost their lives in 2025.
