WinSport delays hill opening due to upcoming water restrictions

Calgary Herald ·

Upcoming water restrictions are putting a freeze on WinSport’s snowmaking plans, leaving the ski and snowboard hill’s opening date up in the air.

The hill was initially scheduled to open Nov. 20, but WinSport announced in a statement Thursday afternoon that the opening date is now uncertain as the city prepares to temporarily shut down the Bearspaw South Feeder main .

The restrictions will begin Nov. 4 and last approximately four weeks, significantly reducing the amount of water that can be distributed across Calgary and restricting outdoor water use.

In the statement, WinSport said the restrictions will affect its ability to make snow for the hill in November, a “critical period” for winter season.

“While we know this uncertainty is disappointing for everyone looking forward to getting back on their skis or snowboard, WinSport supports the need to protect Calgary’s water supply,” the statement read.

The statement said the snowmaking team will be ready to make the fluffy powder when conditions allow, and encouraged visitors to watch for further updates.

The season is anticipated to run until March 28, 2027, weather permitting.
