Gus Lamont: Dozens of new tip-offs flood in after $1m reward announced in outback missing persons case

Dozens of new tip-offs have been received in the search for missing three-year-old August “Gus” Lamont in the South Australian outback.

Two emails and 34 calls had been received by Crime Stoppers since SA Police on Wednesday announced a $1 million reward for information that could help solve the case.

Detectives investigating the case are now assessing the new information.

An additional nine Crime Stoppers reports were also received earlier this week as renewed media attention focused on the approaching first anniversary of Gus’s disappearance.

Major Crime Investigation Branch officer in charge Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke welcomed the response.

“Task Force Horizon investigators are pleased with the response we have received so far,” he said.

“All these reports are currently being assessed and will be investigated further where appropriate.”

The reward of up to $1 million was announced on Wednesday, and matches the state’s record highest reward offered in the notorious cold case of the Beaumont children who went missing in 1966.

It will be paid for information leading to the conviction of the person or people responsible for Gus’s disappearance and/or the recovery of his remains.

Gus was three when he vanished from his family’s Oak Park Station near Yunta on September 27, 2025.

His disappearance was declared a major crime investigation in February 2026 and remains one of South Australia’s most baffling unsolved cases.

Despite extensive searches, investigators have been unable to determine what happened to the little boy.

Premier Peter Malinauskas on Wednesday said the case had “shocked our nation”, while Police Minister Michael Brown said authorities remained convinced “someone out there knows something”.
