Ban extended, opt-out scheme developed in gambling laws

Labor and the coalition have struck a deal to pass long-awaited changes to gambling advertising laws, but criticism of the proposal still remains.

* Gambling ads will be limited to three per hour between 5am and 8.30pm

* The ads will also be banned from being aired during live sports, as well as 15 minutes before a game

* The same laws that exist on broadcast TV will also apply to online services

* Rules on banning gambling during children's shows will also be enshrined in law

* Gambling ads will not be able to be shown on player jerseys and stadiums

* As part of amendments to the laws, Australians will be able to access a one-stop shop to opt out of receiving online gambling ads

* Betting companies will be forced to pay for implementing the opt-out scheme, with the communications watchdog responsible for developing it

* Inducement marketing will also be banned for gamblers for 14 days after they sign up to a wagering company

* Inducements marketing will be banned entirely to all customers who have been identified as being at risk of gambling-related harm

* Commissions to staff or affiliates based on customer activity will be outlawed

* The federal government has been criticised for not implementing a total ban on gambling ads, as recommended in a 2023 report by late Labor MP Peta Murphy

* The Greens, independents and other crossbenchers have also spoken out against the reforms for not going far enough

* Several coalition MPs have also crossed the floor to vote against the proposal backed by Labor and the opposition
