Wheatbelt mobile speed camera operator charged after allegedly causing near head-on crash

A mobile speed camera operator has been charged with a dangerous driving offence — and had his work vehicle impounded, speed camera and all.

Police said the camera operator was working in the Wheatbelt when he overtook a road train, forcing an oncoming car to have to slow down and move onto the shoulder of the road to avoid a head-on collision.

The incident is alleged to have happened about noon on September 29 on the Great Eastern Highway between Tammin and Cunderdin, resulting in the specially fitted-out Isuzu D-Max, which is owned by the Road Safety Commission, being temporarily impounded.

Given the car has specialised camera equipment for road safety, an application for its release was approved on October 12 — with the 67-year-old accused driver’s personal vehicle substituted in its place.

The man has been charged with reckless driving and will face Northam Magistrates Court on December 14.
