A motorbike rider has been killed in a devastating hit-and-run crash, police allege.

The rider, 57, collided with a white sedan on Great Western Hwy at Katoomba, in the NSW Blue Mountains, about 6.15pm on Thursday, according to reports to authorities.

Police were told the sedan failed to stop at the scene and drove away.

“A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is underway, with the assistance of the Crash Investigation Unit,” NSW Police said.

Westbound lanes of the highway remain closed, with motorists urged to avoid the area.
