Australian hiker Cara Severino found safe after Nepal floods

An Australian hiker has been found alive and well in the aftermath of the devastating Nepal floods, which have left at least 41 other Australians unaccounted for.

On Wednesday, a huge chunk of ice broke off a glacier high up in the mountains along the Nepalese-Tibetan border, sending a wave of mud, water and rock cascading down through the heavily populated valleys below.

More than 3000 people are still missing, while the number of people confirmed dead is nearing 700,

Twenty-six-year-old Cara Severino was among dozens of Australians caught up in the incident, and was unaccounted for several days before she was able to make contact with embassy officials on Saturday.

Ms Severino, who remains the only Australian to have been located, said she got out safely thanks to the “amazing people” she had been with at a national park when the disaster unfolded.

She recounted a devastating story of locals who were unable to escape the devastation.

“We passed a guy hiking up to Thulu Safru who lost his whole family when their whole town was destroyed. It’s just so devastating and undeserving,” she said.

“I feel for the families of those still missing, I know how much my family and friends went through.

“Blessed to be from Australia and have the embassy and Australian government giving so much support.”

“This is a rare piece of positive news amid a disaster that has brought immense loss and uncertainty,” Senator Wong said.

She said officials were transporting Ms Severino to a safe location and continue to monitor her condition.

On Sunday morning, Nepalese officials said they were still monitoring a large dam which had formed along a segment of valley, creating potential for more flooding in the area.
