Ohope Wins humanely euthanised after tragic fall in Caulfield Cup
Ohope Wins has been humanely euthanised after falling in a dramatic finish to the Caulfield Cup.
Ohope Wins was one of two horses to fall in the closing stages, with defending champion Half Yours also going down at around the 250m mark.
While connections of Half Yours are breathing a sigh of relief with the Melbourne Cup winner suffering some lacerations and bruises, the news was not good for Ohope Wins.
“The mare was immediately attended to by the veterinary team, however she was unable to be saved due to the nature of the injury sustained,” stewards said after the race.
“RV extends its condolences to Yulong, the owners of Ohope Wins, her trainer Chris Waller and their stable staff who cared for the horse and are deeply saddened by their loss.
“Stewards will conduct an inquiry into the racing incident. The incident will also be renewed post meeting by RV Veterinary Services as is standard practice.”
In better news, both jockeys involved in the fall were able to get to their feet. Mark Zahra (Half Yours) was transported to hospital for further treatment, but he was conscious and alert.
Jye McNeil (Ohope Wins) remained at the track and was treated by on-course medical staff before also being taken to hospital.
Half Yours suffered some lacerations and bruising, but was in good shape otherwise.
“That was terrible to watch, he has a couple of lacerations. He seems bright, he seems composed in himself. He has a laceration under his arm and under his hind leg. They look superficial, he is just with the vets now,” McEvoy Racing said.
Trained by Gavin Bedggood and with John Allen in the saddle, Kingswood beat Saint George in a thrilling finish to the 150th edition of the race.
Third home was Enfjaar, with pre-race favourite Cosmic Crusader fourth.
