Anika Wells accused of treating voters like ‘3-year-olds’ after using Ooshies to explain housing crisis

Communications Minister Anika Wells is facing backlach for using Ooshies to explains Australia’s housing crisis.

The minister took to Instagram and Facebook on Sunday afternoon, sharing a video that drew parallels between the popular supermarket collectables and Australia’s housing crisis.

“What do (Ooshies) and the Australian housing market have in common?” she questioned.

“Both the Ooshie market and the Australian housing market are dictated by supply and demand,” she said with dozens of Ooshies in front of her.

“The problem right now is that supply of Ooshies and supply of housing is not keeping pace with demand.

“To fix that problem and increase supply, at the last budget, Labor told housing investors or Ooshies collectors, you can keep using the tax system to buy Ooshies, but only new ones.

“In turn, that means more new Ooshies to rent and more existing Ooshies for first time buyers.”

The video has drawn the ire of her followers, who likened the explanation to “Play School” and slammed the minister for treating Australian voter’s like “three year olds”.

“Had to explain it in Ooshies so Jim and Albo could understand and relate,” another said.

Chief Executive Officer of Cheek Media, Hannah Ferguson, defended the minister’s tactics on Sunrise on Tuesday, saying she understood the attempt to engage audiences on social media.

“I’m someone on social media. I’ve done some different things to try and beat the algorithm and get people engaging with difficult political concepts. I get what she’s trying to do here,” Ferguson said.

“I do think it feels slightly infantilising, but ultimately this is a politician trying to communicate a complex policy, and it’s clearly cut through if it’s made its way to mainstream media.”

Luke Bona, host of the Bonafide podcast agreed, calling it a good analogy.
